Anna Betts is a journalist based in New York City. Currently, she is a reporter for The Guardian US.

Before joining The Guardian in July 2024, Anna was a reporter at The New York Times and a member of the 2023-2024 Times Fellowship class. At the Times, Anna was on the National Desk and covered a wide range of topics, including education, politics, extreme weather, breaking news, the Georgia criminal indictment of President Donald Trump and others, as well as the impact of the war in Gaza in the United States. Previously, Anna was a reporter at BuzzFeed News in New York, where she covered everything from politics to culture to social trends.

Anna has also freelanced for outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, ELLE Magazine, The Verge, The Observer, The Village Voice, and others. In 2022, as a freelancer, Anna worked on an investigation that examined university partnerships with sports-betting companies. The story was named a semi-finalist for the 2023 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting and was awarded a SABEW prize.

Anna holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, where she was awarded the Trudy Stamm Scholarship and the Wayne W. and Frances G Knight Parrish Scholarship. She earned her undergraduate degree from New York University in 2020, majoring in photography at the Tisch School of the Arts and minoring in Political Science at NYU College of Arts and Sciences. At NYU, she received the Gordon Parks Foundation Scholarship.

Anna’s photographic work has been exhibited at the Bronx Museum of Art (2017) and Photoville Festival (2020). While completing her undergraduate studies, Anna worked at NBC, Marc Jacobs, and various art galleries and photo studios. Her photography work has been published in ELLE Magazine, i-D magazine/Vice, Teen Vogue, and BuzzFeed News.

Anna was raised in the UK and is French and American.
